Classic Holiday Stuffing Recipe - Also known as "dressing", this classic stuffing recipe is the perfect side dish for your Thanksgiving gathering.
- 1 lb. French or Italian bread stale, cut in 1" cubes
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 1/2 cups onion chopped
- 1 1/4 cups celery chopped
- 2 garlic cloves minced
- 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
- 1 egg
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp rubbed sage
- 2 tsp fresh thyme chopped, or 1/2 tsp dried
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley chopped, or 1 tsp dried
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lightly grease a 9"x13" baking dish and add stale bread cubes to the dish.
Heat a large skillet to medium heat and add butter, chopped onions, chopped celery, salt and pepper. Cook until soft, about 5-7 minutes and then add minced garlic and cook until garlic is fragrant. Season with nutmeg, sage, thyme and parsley. Pour mixture over the bread.
In a bowl, whisk the egg and chicken broth. Evenly pour over the bread and stir to fully coat. Cover stuffing with foil for a softer stuffing, or for a crisper stuffing bake uncovered. Bake for 35-40 minutes.
Remove stuffing from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
