Ingredients

  • 1 lb. French or Italian bread stale, cut in 1" cubes
  • 3 tablespoon butter
  • 1 ½ cups onion chopped
  • 1 ¼ cups celery chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 ½ cups chicken broth
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon rubbed sage
  • 2 teaspoon fresh thyme chopped, or ½ teaspoon dried
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Lightly grease a 9"x13" baking dish and add stale bread cubes to the dish.
  • Heat a large skillet to medium heat and add butter, chopped onions, chopped celery, salt and pepper. Cook until soft, about 5-7 minutes and then add minced garlic and cook until garlic is fragrant. Season with nutmeg, sage, thyme and parsley. Pour mixture over the bread.
  • In a bowl, whisk the egg and chicken broth. Evenly pour over the bread and stir to fully coat. Cover stuffing with foil for a softer stuffing, or for a crisper stuffing bake uncovered. Bake for 35-40 minutes.
  • Remove stuffing from oven and let cool slightly before serving.
