Homemade Calzones made with ground beef in tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes baked to a golden perfection. I absolutely love these calzones! They are so easy to make and have so much delicious flavor. I served my calzones with homemade ranch dressing.

    Calzone Recipe

    makes 2 calzones

    Ingredients:

    • 1 - 12" pizza dough (store bought or homemade)
    • ½ lb ground beef
    • ½ white onion, diced
    • 1 clove garlic, minced
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 - 15 oz.can tomato sauce
    • ¼ teaspoon dried basil
    • ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
    • ¼ teaspoon paprika
    • ¼ teaspoon cumin
    • ½ teaspoon worcestershire sauce
    • ½ cup mozzarella cheese
    • 2 tomatoes, sliced (I used campari)
    • 1 egg

    Directions:

    1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add ground beef, onions, salt and pepper. Cook for about 7-9 minutes until onions are soft and beef is browed. Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
    2. Add tomato sauce, basil, oregano, brown sugar, paprika, cumin and worcestershire sauce. Stir, cover, and cook for 15 minutes to let flavor develop.
    3. Preheat the oven to 475 degrees.
    4. Cut your pizza dough in half and roll out into 2 equal sized 7"-9" circles. Transfer pizza dough to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
    5. Sprinkle a ¼ cup of mozzarella cheese on half of the calzone. Top with sliced tomatoes and about ½-3/4 cup of the ground beef and tomato sauce mixture. Gently fold over the calzone and seal the open end shut by pinching and gently folding dough closed. Repeat with the second calzone.
    6. Whisk the egg in a small bowl. Brush egg all over the top of your calzones.
    7. Bake the calzones in your preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes until top is nice and golden.
    8. Remove calzones from the oven and serve with ranch dressing. Enjoy!

      5 stars
This recipe is delicious! I made it using the homemade pizza dough along with it. Soooooo good. My only critique is that I would make them smaller, personal size, because they turn out huge when you make two. I would probably split the dough into four pieces and make them from there.

Other than that 5 stars! Will make again with the other half of the dough I made that I put in the freezer.
