I really love hand pies because you can just pick one up and eat them without having to dirty a dish! They are also perfect for an easy dessert on the go. Just pop one in the toaster oven and hit the road.

When I was a kid, my grandpa would drive through McDonalds and buy two of their apple pies to eat while he sipped on his coffee. He'd eat one right away and save one for later. I think he was definitely onto something!

We topped our hot mini apple pies with vanilla ice cream which is my absolute favorite way to eat apple pie. You can also serve them with a dollop of whipped cream or by themselves. Either way you cannot go wrong with these delicious holiday treats.

I am so happy to share this comforting recipe with you so you can share with your friends and family too. This recipe makes 9 hand pies so if you are cooking for a crowd, simply double the recipe.

Ingredients you need to make the most delicious Apple Hand Pies:

Pie Crusts - I linked my homemade pie crust recipe here for you. You'll need two 9" crusts. You can also use the pillsbury boxed pie crusts. They will need to be stretched into two 9" x 9" squares.

Apples - I used 4 apples in this recipe. You can use gala, honey crisp, granny smith, etc. You'll need 4 cups of cubed and peeled apples.

    Sugar - Granulated white sugar.

Cornstarch - Helps to thicken syrup while the apples are cooking.

Lemon Juice - Adds a fresh flavor to the apples.

Cloves - You'll need about an ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves.

Nutmeg - Ground nutmeg adds a delicious warm fall/winter flavor.

Cinnamon - You'll need ground cinnamon for the pie filling and the cinnamon sugar sprinkled on top.

Tools to have on hand for this recipe:

    • Cutting Board + Chef Knife - Chopping and preparing apples.
    • Measuring Spoons + Cups - For properly measuring the ingredients.
    • Cooking Spoon - To stir the apples while they cook.
    • Baking Sheet - Baking your pies on.
    • Large Skillet - Cooking the apples filling.

How to make Hand Held Apple Pies:

In a small bowl, stir cinnamon sugar mixture and set aside.

Add all of the ingredients for the apple filling to a saucepan over low heat. Stirring frequently, cook for 15-20 minutes until apples are soft and liquids are syrupy. Remove from heat and let cool.

Pull the pie dough out of the fridge while the apples are cooling. Roll each pie dough into a 9" x 9" square and cut into 9 equal squares. This will give you a total of 18 squares between both crusts.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Once the pie filling has cooled, place about 2 tablespoon of filling into the middle of the pie crust square. Repeat with 9 of the squares. Then, top each pie square with remaining squares. Using a fork, pinch all sides to seal. Poke top of pies with fork to create vents.

Whisk egg in a small bowl and brush tops of pies with the egg wash. Then, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture.

Bake pies in the oven for about 23-25 minutes until golden. When done, remove from oven and transfer to a cooling rack.

Serve warm Mini Apple Hand Pies with vanilla ice cream! Enjoy!

Can you freeze this? If so when ready to eat do you reheat in oven?
