Homemade Apple Pie Recipe – Apple pie baked from scratch makes the perfect holiday dessert. There is nothing better than the smell of fresh baked pie filling up the house. The sweet warm smell of cinnamon and apples baking in the oven makes me so happy.

JUMP TO RECIPE

What ingredients do I need to make homemade apple pie?

  • apples – I used granny smith apples, but you can use whatever apples you have on hand.
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • cloves
  • sugar
  • cornstarch
  • lemon juice
  • salt
  • egg – Egg wash for the top of your pie to give it a nice golden crust.
  • pie crusts – Two 9″ pie crusts, I used my homemade pie crust recipe, but you can use store bought.

Tools you need to make homemade apple pie:

  • pie dish
  • deep skillet
  • knife
  • measuring spoons
  • cutting board
  • spoon
  • basting brush

How to make the best Classic Apple Pie:

Prepare two 9″ pie crusts or remove store bought pie dough from fridge/freezer.

Peel apples and slice thinly about 1/8″ – 1/4″ thick. Be sure to remove core/seeds.

In a small bowl mix sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt.

Heat a skillet to medium heat and add the apples, lemon juice and sugar mixture and stir to combine. Cook for about 5 minutes until apples are tender but not too soft, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Lay the first pie crust into a lightly buttered pie dish. Pour apples into the dish. Either lay the entire second crust on top of the pie or cut dough into long even strips 2″ thick and weave the crust making a lattice top. Then, pinch sides close.

Brush top of pie crust with egg wash and then sprinkle evenly with cinnamon sugar mixture.

Place pie in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes until pie is bubbly and crust is golden.

Recipe notes:

*If the top of your pie is getting too dark or it has achieved the level of browning you want, simply place a piece of foil on top and finish cooking. This will prevent further browning while allowing the pie to cook fully on the inside.
