Chocolate Rice Crispy Treats – Delicious rice crispy marshmallow treats with a chocolate crunch bar topping. These put a fun twist on the traditional “Rice Krispie Treats”.
Mouthwatering rice crispy treats kicked up a notch with a delicious chocolate crunch bar topping! These treats are out of this world. My husband and I couldn’t help but sneaking bites throughout the entire day.
As a kid, rice crispy treats were one of my all time favorite desserts! I also loved chocolate crunch bars. So, the two together is literally heaven to me. You can even top them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for absolute perfection.
Not only are these treats delicious, they are so easy to make! From start to finish they only take about 25-30 minutes. This recipe makes about 16 small squares. So if you are baking for a crowd, simply double the recipe.
My Chocolate Crunch Rice Crispy treats are great for birthday parties, potlucks, office celebrations and more! You can make these treats ahead of time and they last for up to 3-4 days and still taste amazing even on day 4.
Tools to have on hand for this recipe:
- Large Skillet – For making the rice crispy treats.
- 13″x 9″ Baking Dish – To form the chocolate crunch rice crispy treats into squares.
- Measuring Cups + Spoons – To measure ingredients for this recipe.
- Small Microwave Safe Bowl – To melt the chocolate for the chocolate crunch topping.
- Rubber Spatula – You’ll need this to make the rice crispy treats and to press the treats into the baking dish.
- Spoon – To stir the chocolate sauce.
Ingredients you need to make homemade chocolate rice crispy treats:
- Rice Krispies – You can use any brand of rice cereal you’d like! I used traditional rice krispie treats brand in this recipe, but I’ve also used great value brand and that worked great as well.
- Butter – You can use unsalted or salted butter.
- Marshmallows – Mini marshmallows work best in this recipe.
- Chocolate Chips – Semi sweet, milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips all work great in this recipe.
How to make homemade Chocolate Rice Crispy Treats at home from scratch:
First, make the rice crispy treats:
Line a 13″ x 9″ baking dish with parchment paper.
In a large skillet over low heat, add butter and marshmallows. Cook, stirring frequently until marshmallows are almost all melted but still slightly lumpy. Then, immediately remove from heat.
Pour rice crispy’s into the marshmallow mixture and mix to combine. Then, using a lightly buttered rubber spatula, press rice crispy’s into the parchment paper lined baking dish. Let cool.
Make the chocolate crunch bar topping:
In a small microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips and microwave for about 15 seconds. Remove from microwave and stir frequently. Place back in the microwave for 10 second increments until chocolate is melted but be very careful not to burn. Between each session stir chocolate frequently. Pour remaining rice crispy’s into the chocolate and stir to combine.
Evenly spread chocolate crunch topping directly on top of the rice crispy treats. Place in the fridge for about 10 minutes to harden quickly. Then remove from fridge, slice into squares and serve. *Storing instructions below.
How to store homemade Chocolate Crunch Rice Crispy Treats:
Store rice crispy treats on the counter wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or in a tightly sealed storage container on the counter for up to 3-4 days.
You can make these a 1-2 days ahead of time if preparing for a party. They don’t get stale fast and are amazing even on day 4.

- 4 cups Mini Marshmallows
