Mongolian Beef and Broccoli – Best easy takeout inspired beef and broccoli recipe made with thin strips of marinated Mongolian beef and steamed broccoli. Serve over steamed rice with green onions and sesame seeds.
My super easy and delicious Beef and Broccoli Recipe is the perfect family friendly and kid friendly meal! From start to finish this dish takes less than 30 minutes to make! This recipe will serve 4 people.
If you are cooking for a larger crowd, you can easily double this recipe. We like to pair this dish with steamed rice, fried rice or chow mein! I will link a few of my favorite Asian side dishes that pair perfectly with beef and broccoli for you below.
Ingredients you need to make Mongolian Beef and Broccoli:
Flank Steak or Sirloin Steak – You’ll need about one pound of flank/sirloin steak to serve 4 people.
Fresh Ginger – I highly recommend using fresh ginger in this recipe. It adds such a delicious flavor to the sauce. If you don’t have fresh – substitute 1 tsp ground ginger.
Fresh Garlic- I highly recommend using fresh garlic in this recipe. If you don’t have fresh – substitute 1 tsp garlic powder.
Soy Sauce – I recommend using low sodium soy sauce in this recipe. Kikkoman is my favorite.
Brown Sugar – Light or dark brown sugar both work great in this recipe.
Oyster Sauce – You can use regular oyster sauce or vegetarian oyster sauce. You can find this in most regular grocery stores. I recommend Kikkoman.
Sesame Oil – A good pure quality sesame oil is best.
Rice Wine Vinegar – If you don’t have rice wine vinegar, you can also use white wine vinegar in this recipe.
Water – For the sauce.
Cornstarch – This creates a delicious texture of the beef making it nice and tender.
Egg – This will go into the beef coating.
Green Onions – Fresh chopped green onions make for a delicious garnish.
Sesame Seeds – Optional garnish.

- Large Skillet – To cook the sauce and beef.
- Cooking Spoon/Spatula – For stirring the sauce and beef.
- Measuring Spoons + Cups – To properly measure all of your ingredients.
- Mixing Bowls – To mix the sauce and to toss the beef in coatings.
How to make Mongolian Broccoli and Beef:
In a small bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients to make the sauce.
Add broccoli to a vegetable steamer or saucepan with a few tablespoons of water. Cover and steam until tender. When done, remove from heat and let cool.
While broccoli is steaming – In a large skillet over medium heat, pour in the sauce and bring to a low simmer until sauce lightly thickens. When done, pour sauce back into the mixing bowl. Wipe skillet clean with a paper towel.
Thinly slice beef into 1/4″ strips and toss in a large bowl. Toss beef with cornstarch. Add whisked egg to beef and toss to fully coat.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully add beef to the hot skillet and begin to stir fry the beef. Stir beef frequently until no longer pink. Remove cooked beef from skillet and set aside on plate.
Carefully wipe any excess grease from the skillet. Pour sauce into the skillet and heat up over medium-high heat. Toss beef and broccoli in sauce and stir fully coat. Remove from heat.
Serve Mongolian Beef and Broccoli with fresh chopped green onions and sesame seeds(optional) over steamed rice.

Mongolian Beef and Broccoli
Ingredients
- 1 lb Flank Steak or Sirloin Steak
- 3 tbsp Cornstarch
- 1 Egg
- 2 tbsp Oil canola or vegetable
- 1 bunch Green Onions chopped garnish
- 3 cups Broccoli Florets
Mongolian Beef Sauce:
- 1 tbsp Fresh Ginger grated
- 1 tbsp Fresh Garlic minced/grated
- 3 tbsp Soy Sauce low sodium
- 3 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 1 tbsp Oyster Sauce
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 1 tbsp Rice Wine Vinegar
- 1/2 cup Water
Instructions

Excellent recipe! Will definitely be making again!
Made this for lunch for hubby and me. It turned out excellent. I stir fried the broccoli for 3 minutes, then added the onions for a minute and half, then removed and did the meat. I used the “velvetized” meat technique, using round steak. It was SO tender! The only sauce ingredient I changed was adding crushed red pepper.
Great recipe. Hubby said I can make this again, anytime!
