General Tso's Chicken over White Rice

Serve General Tso's Chicken with your favorite Asian side dishes like fried rice, steamed rice, chow mein, salad, steamed veggies and more!

We served our chicken over steamed white rice with a sprinkle of freshly chopped green onions.

    What's in General Tso's Chicken?

Chicken Thighs - Boneless, skinless chicken thighs is my preferred meat for this recipe, but you can also use chicken breasts.

Cornstarch - For the chicken batter.

Flour - For the chicken batter. I used all-purpose unbleached flour.

Egg - You'll need one egg for the chicken batter.

Green Onions - To top your dish with. This is an optional garnish but I like the added freshness it gives the dish.

    What's in General Tso Sauce?

Soy Sauce -  I recommend using low sodium sauce in this recipe to prevent the sauce from becoming too salty.

Brown Sugar - Light or dark brown sugar both work great in this recipe.

Rice Vinegar - Adds a nice tang and acidity to the sauce.

Oyster Sauce - You can use regular oyster sauce or vegetarian oyster sauce.

Sriracha - Adds a nice spice to the sauce.

Garlic - Fresh garlic gloves are best in this recipe. You'll need two medium sized cloves.

Ginger - Fresh ginger is highly recommended. You'll need a tablespoon minced/finely grated.

Sesame Seeds - This will go into the sauce and they are also used as a garnish.

Red Pepper Flakes - You'll need the red pepper flakes to achieve a nice spice level.

How to make Easy General Tso's Chicken:

In a small saucepan, whisk together all of the ingredients to make the sauce.

Bring sauce to a low simmer for about 10 minutes until lightly thickens and darkens. Stir occasionally. Remove sauce from heat.

In a large mixing bowl, add cubed chicken with cornstarch and mix to fully coat. Add whisked egg to the chicken and gently toss to combine. Sprinkle flour over chicken and gently toss to combine.

Add oil to a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add chicken to the skillet. Gently spread chicken out into an even layer and let cook until bottom is golden.

Once the bottom of the chicken is golden, flip over, gently breaking pieces apart if stuck together. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until golden and chicken is cooked through to at least 165 degrees and juices run clear.

Carefully drain any excess grease from the skillet.

Pour sauce over chicken and gently toss to combine.
