Best Ever Moist Cornbread - Delicious, fluffy and moist cornbread is the perfect pair for your favorite chili's, grilled meats, and much more. Top with warm butter and honey for the perfect slice.

    best moist cornbread recipe

We paired our cornbread with my Slow Cooker Ground Beef Chili recipe, but we also love serving cornbread with beef roast, grilled meats, fried chicken and so much more! It's also great by itself with a little honey and butter.

This recipe makes about 12 small or 9 large slices of cornbread. If you are cooking for a large crowd, you can easily double this recipe. If not, cornbread makes delicious leftovers that will last on your counter in a sealed container for up to 2-3 days.

Ingredients you need to make homemade cornbread:

All-Purpose Flour - A very versatile flour that works perfect for cornbread. You can use bleached or unbleached flour.

Cornmeal - You'll need regular yellow ground cornmeal to make this recipe.

Granulated White Sugar - You can also use cane sugar or light brown sugar in substitution.

Baking Powder - This will help the bread to rise.

Eggs - Eggs create the perfect texture in this bread recipe.

Milk - I used whole milk in this recipe, but you can use low fat or non fat milk as well.

Vegetable Oil - You may also use avocado or canola oil if you do not have vegetable oil on hand.

Salt - I almost always use sea salt in my recipes but you can use iodized or kosher salt.

Garlic Powder - Adds a nice flavor to the cornbread. You can skip this ingredient if needed as it is optional.

Onion Powder - Adds a nice flavor to the bread. You can skip this ingredient as it is optional.

*FULL MEASUREMENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE LISTED BELOW.

Tools to have on hand for this recipe:

    • Baking Dish - To bake your cornbread in. You'll need an 8"x8" glass, metal or stone baking dish.
    • Measuring Cups + Spoons - For properly measuring all of the ingredients.
    • Mixing Bowl - To mix the cornbread mixture in prior to baking.
    • Whisk or Fork - To whisk your cornbread mixture together.

How to make the Best Ever Moist Cornbread:

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder and sugar.

Add milk, eggs and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients and mix to fully combine.

Lightly butter an 8"x8" baking dish. Pour batter into the dish evenly.

Transfer dish to the oven and bake for 22-25 minutes until golden and a knife runs through the bread and comes out clean.

Remove bread from oven and allow to cool before serving. Serve with a slice of butter and honey.

*Store leftover cornbread in a sealed container or storage bag on the counter for up to 2-3 days.

Can I use chopped pickled jalapenos in this recipe without affecting the cake like texture?

Can you omit the baking powder if you have self rising cornmeal?

I like fluffy and tall cornbread. I would not omit all of the baking powder. I would use 1t-1 1/2t of baking powder.

Julia, it says a quarter teaspoon each if you're using it.

Loved the recipe, we omitted the garlic and onion though.
